Theft of kart sparks huge police chase

Thursday 23rd April 2009, 10:55AM BST.

police_051Two boys on a stolen pedal go-kart sparked a police chase through an area of Telford before dumping it and fleeing.

Police arrived in Shawbirch, prompting fears from residents that a major incident had happened, but the youngsters managed to give officers the slip.

The boys, aged between 12 and 14, stole the red and black kart from a property in Shawbirch Road, Admaston, at 2.45pm yesterday. They raced down Shawbirch Road and along the Silkin Way before crossing fields where they dumped the kart and fled into woodlands.

About five officers in a number of vehicles were in the area but the boys managed to escape. Chris Ammonds, spokesman for Telford police, said the go-kart was recovered and returned to its owner, but despite a search nobody was traced in connection with the theft.

One eye witness said: “There were police everywhere. We thought it was something really serious because there were cars and officers everywhere and then someone said it was just a stolen children’s go-kart.”

Anyone with information should call Telford police on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
