Coughlan remains upbeat

graham-coughlan2Skipper Graham Coughlan insists Shrewsbury Town remain on course for the League Two play-offs – despite seeing Dagenham & Redbridge leapfrog them into seventh place.

The Daggers registered a stunning 3-1 victory over league leaders Brentford last night to move above Town on goal difference.

Shrewsbury travel to Dagenham on the last day of the season in what could be a crunch winner-takes-all occasion, but Coughlan is refusing to look beyond Saturday’s clash with Lincoln City at the Prostar Stadium.

Victory in both those games would still be enough to take Town back up into the top seven – and a second play-off campaign in three years.

“Last night’s victory for Dagenham means there’s maybe a little bit of added tension, but we were up for it anyway before that game,” said the big Northern Irishman.

“We knew we had to go and beat Lincoln and last night just confirms that – it’s going to be a massive, massive game.

“In many ways it hasn’t made much of a difference because we always said we had won our first three games and we wanted to win the last three, too.

“Our focus can’t be turned away from the Lincoln game on Saturday or we will be in trouble. It’s still in our own hands, and that’s the way we like it.”

Coughlan believes the Shrewsbury fans will also have their part to play in the weekend clash with the Imps and is urging them to help the cause.

The experienced defender believes everyone may have to be patient in what is sure to be a nervy occasion.

“We don’t have to win the game in the first five minutes, we can win it in the last five with the help of the crowd,” he said.

“They will be feeling the tension I’m sure, but that’s part and parcel of football.

“If we don’t get a result then by all means show your frustration at the end and we’re all big enough to take it. But, for 90 minutes, please get behind us and together we can get over the line.”
