Council error over polling station sites
Tuesday 21st April 2009, 2:10PM BST.
Residents in two areas of Shrewsbury were sent electoral forms directing them to the wrong polling stations for this summer’s elections in a mix-up by council officials.
People in Coton Hill were told their nearest polling station was Bear Steps Hall in St Alkmund’s Square, while people in the town centre were told their station was at the Corporation Lane Quaker Meeting House in Coton Hill.
Elections are due to be held on June 4 for Shropshire Council and the European Parliament.
Today council officials admitted the error but said new letters were not needed as polling cards would be sent out in May.
The mix-up was discovered by Dr Maxwell Winchester, who was canvassing in the Quarry and Coton Hill ward. Hew said: “It’s an absolute stuff-up and I hope they can sort this out.”
Simon Alton, spokesman for Shropshire Council, said the letters were sent out to check people’s details.
He said: “There will be no need to reissue any letters because all electors will be sent a polling card in early May which will contain the correct information.
“The issue in the Quarry and Coton Hill has arisen because residents in the north of the ward were given details of the polling station in the south instead of their nearest one, and vice versa.”
Lyn Beddoes, owner of the Woodman pub in Coton Hill, said it was the talk of the area and David Winslow, who lives in the town centre, said he had no idea how to find the Coton Hill Quaker Meeting House.

Good start for the new council.

As the Lib Dem agent I reported this to the electoral office at Shirehall on Friday but did not get an answer from then until yesterday afternoon. I am disappointed they are not reissuing the letters as this mistake has caused a lot of confusion in two wards.

Yes, no doubt Shropshire Council will put this down to ‘teething troubles’, which to be fair it probably was.
