Town back in the play-offs
Monday 20th April 2009, 8:54AM BST.
It’s been a long wait, but the result was well worth it as Shrewsbury Town’s second league away win of the season has put them back in the play-offs, writes blogger James Pugh.
Fans have to think back to August 16 when Town last won an away game, beating Exeter 1-0.
That win made it two wins out of two and things were looking promising for automatic promotion.
A lot has happened since then and with just two games left things are back in Town’s hands.
Like recent performances away from home, Town played well and they thoroughly deserved to beat Rotherham 2-1.
But yet again they did things the hard way as fans were left biting their nails towards the end.
Smiles at the end of games have been a rare thing recently and it is a great feeling for players to finally remove the monkey that has been on their back for so long.
After deservedly going 1-0 up, Town let their lead slip and left fans thinking – here we go again!
But some rare luck, good play by Ashton, and some Town character meant we got back in front and held on for three precious points.
There were excellent performances throughout the team, especially Kelvin Langmead who has got over his error against Bury and showed why he is regarded as a top class centre half.
Omer Riza also made his long-awaited debut for us and he might have arrived in the first team at just the right time in our promotion push.
Despite the poor results away from home this season, the fans have been fantastic and that win was a well-deserved one for them as well as the team.
One thing that has been evident in recent weeks is that we have been more positive and took games to the opposition. Finally we have got the result to match the performance.
With two games left, two wins will put Town in the playoffs and from then on any team have got a chance of winning gaining promotion.
I think Town would be regarded as one of the favourites as we are solid in defence, have got players who can score goals and we seem to raise our game against tougher opposition.
After heartache two seasons ago at Wembley, I think we have got a better team now and surely we can’t miss out again!
The two remaining games against Lincoln and Dagenham won’t be easy, but the win against Rotherham might just have given us the boost we needed to finish the season in style.
Dagenham have got a game in hand over us, but it couldn’t come much tougher than against Brentford, meaning that things are likely to go down right to the wire in the final game of the season.

At half time on Saturday, my wife said to me, “If you and the bloke next to you continue to moan in the 2nd half I’m moving seats”.
But to be fair, I had just paid £40 for the two of us to get in, and as I have been watching Shrewsbury for 34 years I felt justified to moan at what I thought was one of the poorer performances I have seen.
That said, credit where it is due, the team kept going and ground out a result – some times you just have to win ugly.
Sure there have been far better performances away from home this season, but the hoodoo has hopefully been broken and the condfidence gained can see us pick up wins in last games to secure that play-off place.
C’mon you Blues.
