MP in burner inquiry

Monday 20th April 2009, 1:05PM BST.

incinerator-1-gallery3A Shropshire MP has commissioned a report into a £60 million incinerator which could be built in Shrewsbury, claiming the town will soon exceed its recycling limits and will not need a burner in the future.

Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury, said he was worried commercial waste will have to be brought in from other areas to keep the incinerator at full capacity.

He is calling on Shropshire Council to look at other options – such as an idea from America called Recycle Bank, which boosts recycle rates and diverts waste away from landfill.

He said: “I fear the incinerator will be used for commercial waste brought in from outside Shropshire.

“I’m going to be investigating an American company called Recycle Bank.”

kawczynskiMr Kawczynski said he would ask a representative from the company to speak to councillors.

Donald Macphail, managing director of Veolia Environmental Services in Shropshire, said: “The EWF has been designed to take domestic type waste.

“However, if there is any spare capacity, we would be able to take commercial waste from around the county.”

Gareth Proffitt, spokesman for the council, said: “Shropshire Council’s waste management team would be very happy to meet with Daniel Kawczynski to discuss the energy from waste proposals in more detail, and to address any other concerns he may have.”

But it would be for the whole Shropshire Council area, not just for Shrewsbury and until there is 100% recycling I’d rather the rubbish be burned to create electricity than go to landfill.

Darn it! I thought from the title this was going to be about an inquiry into burning MPs.
Niall, if that was an intentional piece of recycling, it was magnificent!

Grey; you could use better cheaper, cleaner plasma gasification with autoclaving. 2x more energy/tonne waste; 0.5% to landfill rather than 20-25% toxic IBA ash ..is ecotoxic..5% flue ash that is hazardous..from burning (combustion adds weight to ash) and the IBA/FA both need transporting toxic landfilling somewhere. Near your house or someones farm perhaps??

Recycling will never get to 100% if the incinerator is given the go-ahead.

    Would you not agree, Grey?

surely as tax payers we should not be subsidising the building of a commercial facility, if that is needed it should stand alone on its on two feet as a commercial entity without public subsidy

who has he commissioned a report from?

    commercial consultancy?

    Academics?

    other experts?

such reports are expensive, Far beyond the means of an MP’s salary, so how is he paying for such a report?

this is a complete change in tack from this company they have always promised this facility was exclusively for HOUSEHOLD waste, now they are changing this

I agree Don, I work in the environmental field but take issue with some of the comments relating to PM10 particles and so forth. I share your concern in respect of commercial waste being incinerated. I think a sensible debate between all parties should be held soon. The notion of plasma gassification is a red herring too ! If it is so cheap and safe why are there only a handful of them around the wrold ?

PAULO, Mr Kawczynski is doing his job, and responding to the concerns of his constituents.

This is surely what democratic politics is all about, isn’t it?

I wonder whether the report that is being commissioned is being paid for through expenses, and if so why haven’t we been asked if we minded?

just remember, its your town, your money, your decision, after all these councillors and their contractor, THEY WORK FOR US, we literally will pay their wages and pay for every cent of that burner (ten times over due to PFI loan interest) and its totally up to you if you dont like it, get off the internet, get out and vote, stop blogging and start getting active, YOU HAVE POWER, you decide

simple solution, no need to build an incinerator in Telford because the one in Shrewsbury will be more than adequate to handle the waste from Telford as well,
wind up the nimby and watch him go

Yes 2 in Shropshire is not well thought out, so sharing shrewsburys would be sensible or indeed vice versca or perhaps better still just a single strategic site in the west midlands conurbation to service all the region, certainly would be more sensible to have the economies of scale of one giant power plant rather than lots of little ones with all the grid connections, planning applications and duplication of efforts

16, are you aware that more jobs could be created by massively expanding recycling and expanding waste sorting and reclamation facilities?

More than 2,400 jobs have been lost in Shropshire in the last eight months ( http://www.shropshirestar.com/2009/04/22/budget-county-job-losses-mount/ ).
