Driver in court after hitting shop
Monday 20th April 2009, 11:40AM BST.
A driver faces a community sentence after ploughing a car through the front of a Shropshire charity shop.
The door and windows of the British Heart Foundation shop in The Cross, Oswestry, were destroyed when the black Audi crashed through them.
Darren Bird, 29, admitted driving without due care or attention, with no insurance or driving licence and failing to provide a specimen of breath at a special hearing at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court on Saturday, following the crash on Friday just before 1am.
The court heard he had been drinking before deciding to go out to buy some cigarettes in his girlfriend’s car.
Mr Alan Parkhurst, presiding magistrate, told Bird: “Your behaviour threatened lives and property.”
The case was adjourned for a further hearing at Oswestry Magistrates Court tomorrow.
Bird, of Highfields, Trefonen, Oswestry, was released on bail.
The charity shop was reopening today after volunteers spent the weekend cleaning up the debris and restocking the shop.
