Busy weekend for fire services

Monday 20th April 2009, 2:30PM BST.

Two people were taken to hospital and a teenager had to be rescued by firefighters as emergency services were kept busy across Shropshire over the weekend.

Firefighters were called to rescue a 13-year-old boy who climbed on to Whittington Castle roof for a dare – and got stuck.

And a 12-year-old girl and 50-year-old man needed hospital treatment after injuring themselves taking part in leisure pursuits in south Shropshire.

The boy had to be helped from the castle roof yesterday, at about 7.15pm.

A crew from Oswestry Fire Station used a nine-metre ladder to reach the boy and then help him down from the building.

Crew manager Adrian Bowen today issued a warning to youngsters not to climb high buildings.

He said: “It is a very dangerous thing to do because it was high and the building is not safe to climb on. He could easily have been injured if he had lost his balance.

“He was among a group of about 10 to 12 kids and he went up for a bit of dare with his friends.

“He could not get back down so we had to go and get him.

“Once we got him down we gave him some advice and then left.

“He was fine and uninjured and the police were not involved, but we must stress how dangerous climbing on buildings can be.

“These stunts can have terrible consequences.”

The girl was taken to hospital with head and neck pain after falling from a horse near Bridgnorth.

She was injured after falling at a country estate off Cheswardine Lane, Norton, yesterday, shortly before 11.45am.

The girl was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital, Telford, but her injuries were not believed to be serious.

The man was airlifted to hospital following a quad bike crash on farmland near Bridgnorth.

He suffered a broken leg after the vehicle tipped over as he steered around a log.

He was riding the quad bike down an overgrown gully between fields in the Newton area when the incident happened on Saturday.

Stef Cormack, a Midlands Air Ambulance paramedic, said: “As he tried to get past a log the quad bike tipped over and he broke his leg.

“We went out and gave him some pain relief and sedation to get him out of the gully and took him to the Princess Royal Hospital, Telford.”

She said the air ambulance from Cosford was alerted to the incident north of Bridgnorth at about noon.
