Skipper Whitehead fit for run-in
Saturday 18th April 2009, 2:00PM BST.
Skipper Stuart Whitehead will be fit for AFC Telford United’s likely play-off campaign – despite missing a second straight game this afternoon.
The experienced defender was ruled out of this afternoon’s trip to Southport due to a pulled hamstring, which he suffered in the 3-1 Bank Holiday Monday defeat at Alfreton.
He also missed last Wednesday’s 2-0 victory against Farsley Celtic but was quick to play down any fears of a protracted absence.
Injury ruined the end of his campaign last year and he returned for the ultimately doomed play-off double-header against Barrow only half-fit.
But the situation is very different this time and he expects to be able to hit the ground running when he does make his comeback.
“It’s a little bit sore, but it’s nothing major,” said Whitehead.
Knowing
“I think I might be able to play against Burscough on Tuesday but, knowing what our physios are like, they’ll probably do things by the book.
“A hamstring injury is usually 10 days so it might be a bit touch and go for Tuesday, but we’ll see.
“At least I should be nice and fresh for the play-offs.”
Telford went into this afternoon’s clash with Southport five points clear of Droylsden still needing five points to mathematically seal their play-off place.
It is a strong position for the Bucks, though Whitehead refuses to accept the extension to their season is signed and sealed.
“I still don’t think it is done and dusted,” he said.
“But the pressure is on Droylsden as they have to win all of their games and then we just have to match what they do.”
