Garner aims for Town return

Saturday 18th April 2009, 1:00PM BST.

Shrewsbury Town’s forgotten goalkeeper Glyn Garner insists he hasn’t given up hope of forcing his way back into the plans of manager Paul Simpson.

Garner has played just seven matches this term and has not been seen since the 2-2 draw at Chesterfield in November after a season playing second fiddle to on-loan man Luke Daniels.

But, with a year still left on his contract, the Welshman is determined to keep battling for his place.

“You never know in football,” said Garner, who has been battling against a shoulder problem in recent weeks. “I love playing for the club and the fans are great.

“I just want to be playing and hopefully that will be at Shrewsbury.

“When I was 23 I had two years as understudy to Paddy Kenny at Bury and since then, I’ve had eight years playing week in week out.

“It has been frustrating but all you can do is keep working hard.

“Sometimes it can make you a better goalkeeper because you learn to appreciate the games when they come around.”

Meanwhile, supporters have been given their chance to vote on their player of the year.

Having already claimed the League Two gong, top scorer Grant Holt is sure to figure prominently while skipper Graham Coughlan is another name being touted for the award.

Nominations can be sent to Shrewsbury Town or via e-mail to ian@shrewsburytown.co.uk. The award will be presented at the annual dinner on Sunday, May 3.
