The former governor of the Bank of England has died, aged 70, following a long battle with cancer, the Bank of England said today.
Lord George, formerly Eddie George, faced many challenges during his time in the post, including the collapse of Barings bank.
He was knighted in 2000 and stepped down in 2003 after his second five-year tenure.
His successor, Mervyn King, said he was “deeply saddened” as he announced his death.
