Concern over broken glass in play area
Saturday 18th April 2009, 11:25AM BST.
A broken beer bottle was found partially buried in a football pitch near Shrewsbury – with a sharp piece of glass sticking out of the ground.
The bottle was discovered by a woman walking her dog at the Stanley Parker Playing Fields, Bayston Hill, who said the “senseless” act could have seriously injured somebody.
The 52-year-old grandmother, who declined to be named, spoke today about her fears that fears an animal or child could have suffered a serious injury.
She said she found the bottle while walking her dog on Thursday, at about 7.45am, but fears there could have been more buried elsewhere on other pitches at the site.
The woman believes youths may have buried the bottle overnight.
“I was shocked at finding it,” she said.
“I was walking my dog and happened to glance down and in front of me was a glass bottle which had been smashed and left with a jagged edge coming out of the ground.
“I pulled out as much as I could out because I thought if nobody else saw it they could get hurt. It’s so stupid and senseless. What are these people thinking about?”
Anne Chalkley, Bayston Hill Parish Council clerk, said she had reported the matter to the village’s police community support officer and warned anyone who came across any bottles to report it.
