What do you think of new council symbol?
Friday 17th April 2009, 10:14AM BST.
This is the new emblem which has been adopted by Shrewsbury’s new town council. What do you think of it?
The design was delayed last year as a debate raged because nobody was sure what species of big cat should appear on it.
Shrewsbury’s heraldic coat of arms features three loggerheads – heraldic leopards – but over the last 200 years the crest has appeared with both lions and leopards.
However, bosses at Shrewsbury Town Council have eventually decided to go with the loggerheads following advice from heraldic experts.
The crest will be used at council meetings and printed on stationery, official vehicles and documents.
Acting council clerk Mike Croston said it featured the leopards, unlike the old Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council logo which used lions.
He said: “I know the advice from The College of Arms in London was that the earliest record was leopards, although it was never really conclusive and it seems to have fluctuated with loggerheads and lions.
“But we went with the earliest record, which was the leopards.”
Mr Croston said the logo was produced by a designer in Birmingham.
Robert Noel, of The College of Arms, investigated the case last year using ancient manuscripts.
He said armorists still debated to this day whether the animals in the original arms of England were meant to be lions or leopards.
But he said in Shrewsbury’s case the evidence appeared to point towards the leopards.
In order to use the heraldic arms on a logo, the council had to acquire a Royal Licence which caused the delay in the design of the crest.

i like it, the historicalness, the link to shrewsbury town fc and the floreat salopia (may shropshire flourish) which is a nice tip of the hat to the whole shrewsbury catchment area as well as the town itself

Dated. Is it not time for Shrewsbury to be dragged, (kicking and screaming if we must) in to the 20th (forget the 21st) century?

The crest is fine if rather fussy. I just hope that the new Council is worth all the money it is costing. The initial meeting this week did not bode well with the initial skirmish of a petty squabble over the Weeping Cross Depot. This is despite the fact that Council Tax payers across the County are making a direct subsidy of £415,000 each year to the new Council.
It will become highly embaressing if the new Council degenerates to the level of the Town Council at Ludlow were I understand 8 Members are currently suspended following allegations by fellow Councillors.

Really impressed well done everyone.

i think the tax payers money could have been put to use for more important things, and the new creat is a waste of money and is a disgraces to shrewsbury

How about two grinning fat cats {who says satires dead} and a giant fishbone on the sheild – echo of the public sculpture on the river.
The banner looks amateurish – straight off a clip-art site. No graphic designers on the new council then?

I’m not going to think about it, I’m just going to hit the special “Predictable Response” key on my keyboard…
Waste of taxpayers’ money… better things to spend it on… credit crunch… blah blah…
Sorry about that. Actually, it’s not bad. I’m glad nobody tried to modernise it as these kind of things should be designed to last well into the future.

The town council is a complete waste of time and money,it’s just an ego trip and an easy way to get some expences,i thought the new set up was to save taxpayers money ?.

I like it a lot. Very proud and in keeping with Shrewsbury heritage rather than any silly attempt to reinvent something that doesn’t need to be reinvented. So, can we also use it for Shrewsbury Town Football Club’s badge to replace the meaningless, clip art style, ridiculously hairy-maned lion?
Well said julie, totally agree. The old maxim applies, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. What was wrong with the old one?
It looks like something you would see in a Walt Disney film – extremely childish
Report abuse
I expected a bunch of ound signs on a shield. After all, some are going to get very rich very quick now. a waste.
Well at least it’s in keeping with local heritage – I’ll give the council that much.
Though it would be interesting to know how much it cost.
boring totally boring…cant we keep up with the times and have something more modenish..opps sorry, forgot shropshire is stuck in a time warp.
Why on earth would you go to a company in Birmingham to design this? There are any number of excellent design agencies in the county and the council should be doing everything possible to support these local businesses, credit crunch on not. The logo itself? Nothing new.
The design is ok.
HOW MUCH DID IT COST TO COMMISSION?
My guess is they have paid a fortune of your money for this when the could have asked all the local schools to submit their thoughts.
keeping the loggerheads was the right move, the council have ruined this town with stupid decisions but i have to say this one is ok, however it does;nt mean to say they are in the good books…. wasting money on pointless sculptures and being tory have probably sounded out the end of them in shrewsbury, lets look forward now to council hopefully in the near future being non tory.

what a waste of our money!!!!!!!!
what was wrong with the orifinal
what about pot holes that cause damage to cars
what about the schools
what about the hospitals
what do you care what we think
we earn and you spend
Report abuse
does this mean Shrewsbury Town fc can revert back to their old crest then?
In Todays present situation, with all that is going on economically, and with Government in general,…
Does anyone really CARE what sybmols coucils use?
There are FAR NORE pressing things to worry about.
very well done. you have done my historic county well and all should be congratulated. floreat salopia, and even the shrews won away on saturday.
if the council are having a necktie produced with this motif on, 1 for one will buy one
Report abuse
justin gill, how right you are, the football clubs latest badge with it’s lenny the lion badge has been a disaster and needs changing to the council motif. how can the lads play without floreat salopia on their chests
Report abuse
Its the same
what a waste of public money redesgining it then
Report abuse
At no point in the article does it mention what this cost? Which begs the question how can people say it is a waste of money? It does seem that some people will moan at anything!
Designing a symbol which needs to work well at varying sizes and reproduce accurately using different printing methods is not as easy or straightforward as some people seem to think. The problem is that DTP and illustration software is ten a penny to anyone with a PC – Now everyone thinks they are a graphic designer – the results often tell a very different story!
With the above in mind I actually think that this is a reasonably well designed crest and probably better for reproduction purposed than its predecessors.
its exactly the same as the old SABC one, just like the shropshire council one is the same as the old shropshire county council logo
Report abuse
WHY DONT WE LET STFC RUN THE COUNCIL, THEY WIOULD DO A FAR BETTER JOB…… AT LEAST THEIR AT HOME ALL THE TIME!
dumdee didle dum dadad da .
ooooooo.
I would have prefered it in pink.
Very impressive and well suited for the town and it’s history.
Well done.
