Jamie Burnett lines up the missed black that sparked the investigation

Police are investigating world number two snooker player Stephen Maguire’s victory over Jamie Burnett at a match in Shropshire.

Maguire beat Burnett at the Maplin UK Championship clash in Telford in December – but the clash became the focus for a betting scandal after it was revealed that a flurry of stakes had been placed on a 9-3 scoreline.

It is understood Strathclyde Police launched the investigation after they were contacted by the Gambling Commission after the irregular number of bets on a 9-3 win by Maguire was noticed.

The match at the Telford International Centre finished with the scoreline after Burnett missed a black in the 12th frame. The pair will face each other in the first round of the World Snooker Championships which start tomorrow in Sheffield – in a repeat of the most controversial match of the season.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: “Strathclyde Police economic crime unit confirm that after consultation with the Procurator Fiscal’s office they are carrying out initial inquiries into the matter.”

Both players have maintained their innocence since the match fixing allegations were first made.

Burnett said he had never felt such pressure to pot the black in his life.
