Enjoy this classic rural scene from the Shropshire borders over 70 years ago.
A blacksmith is shoeing a horse, while a gentleman seated on a milk churn watches proceedings with interest. This picture was taken at Middletown in 1938, and shows the local blacksmith’s shop.
The picture was loaned to us by Sally Anne Richards.

My dad,Bert Millward was a driver on the steam trains to and from the Granvile Collery for about 15 years before having to give up work with lukimier in 1969 I remember as a girl walking up to the Granvile from Donnington which was all field then, with my mom brothers and sisters to see him at work.He would take his bottel of tea ,eggs and bacon to put on the shovel then into the fire to have for his breakfast or dinner.Names that we, my mom and brother remember are Arthur Leek,Dick Beddall,Don Mancel, and Mr Doody weather they worked on the trains or at the pit itself I do,nt know
