Council plans memorial to marine

A lasting memorial to a Shropshire Royal Marine killed by a suspected teenage suicide bomber is being planned by his local council.
Wrockwardine Wood and Trench Parish Council, which covers the area where Damian Davies grew up and his parents still live in, is forging ahead with plans to erect a plaque in Holy Trinity Church in memory of the marine who lost his life while serving in Afghanistan in December.
The 27-year-old was killed in the attack in Helmand Province on December 12, along with two other soldiers.
He left a wife Joanne and young son Matthew as well as parents Ken and Maddison, brothers Carl, Warren and Austin, and a sister Ceri. He also had an older brother Jason, who died as a baby.
Damian attended Wrockwardine Wood School and lived with his parents in the area from the age of four.
The council has agreed to put up the plaque in recognition of his selfless action. Yvonne Taylor, parish council clerk, said councillors had wholeheartedly backed the idea to honour Damian, who was also known as Damo.
“We are looking into the details at the moment but it will definitely be done,” she said.
Damian’s widow said his family welcomed the move. “It is a lovely thing to do,” she said.
The marine was buried at St George’s Parish Church – where the couple married in 2005 – in a full military funeral on Christmas Eve.
