Bucks on the brink?
Thursday 16th April 2009, 12:19PM BST.
Victorious AFC Telford United have taken a giant leap towards the Blue Square North play-offs, assistant manager Larry Chambers declaring: “It’s ours to lose.”
The Bucks beat Farsley Celtic 2-0 in a nervy home clash last night, Carl Rodgers and Danny Edwards scoring the goals inside the last 15 minutes.
It’s a result that leaves them in fifth place, but five points clear of Droylsden with just three games to go.
“We’ve made a massive step towards getting into the play-offs,” said Chambers.
“It’s ours to lose but we’ve got a tough game at Southport on Saturday because they will still think they can win this league.
“It’s in our own hands – we need to go to Southport and get something then pick three points up against Burscough next Tuesday and I think that will be enough.
“It’s been a tough time – we’ve played five games in nine days and it’s a massive task.”
Telford had to bide their time at the New Bucks Head last night, missing a few decent opportunities before Rodgers finally broke the deadlock.
The over-riding sensation at the final whistle was relief rather than joy, with Chambers admitting it was a game where nothing other than a win would have sufficed.
“We did just about deserve it, but there was a lot of anxiety about the place from the word go,” he said.
“Let’s not beat about the bush, that was a game we had to win.
“We made it clear that we believed the season rested on last night’s game.
“It wasn’t a huge crowd – the fans that were here made some good noise.
“But there wasn’t a fantastic atmosphere and it was up to us to create that by playing at a higher tempo.”
- Manager Rob Smith, assistant Chambers and chairman Lee Carter will all be taking questions from Telford fans in a Radio Shropshire phone-in tomorrow evening between 6pm and 7pm.
