Storms will lead to sunshine. Honest.

Wednesday 15th April 2009, 11:31AM BST.

rain-splashThunderstorms and a dark and rainy morning were set to give way to the warmest day of the year so far in Shropshire today.

Rush-hour traffic on many of the county’s main roads was forced to a crawl by the early downpours, but weathermen predicted the skies would clear and temperatures could hit 18C (64F) later today, well above the seasonal average of 12-13C (54-55F), and much to the delight of the thousands of schoolchildren enjoying their Easter break.

John Warner, Shropshire Star weatherman, said: “We have experienced temperatures of 24C (75F) in the past, so it is not going to be a record breaker, but it should be the warmest day of the year so far.

“There is still a risk of heavy showers tonight and tomorrow, however.

“High pressure will then move down from the north so we should be in for several dry and sunny days.”

A cold wind is expected to keep temperatures down to about 11C (52F) on Friday and Saturday.

“The dry spell with sunny periods was then expected to last on into Tuesday next week.

Looking further ahead the Met Office predicts summer temperatures across the UK are likely to be warmer than average although rainfall will be near or above the seasonal norm.

Long-range forecasters say Britain can expect a “typical summer”.
