P&O suspends cross channel servicesP&O Ferries has suspended its cross channel services as French fishermen again blocked Calais in protest at EU quotas.

The ferry company took the decision at 06:00 BST as the fishermen’s protests entered a second day. The blockade was lifted last night which allowed some of the estimated 3,000 stranded British holidaymakers to return home, but was restarted this morning.

The ports at Boulogne and Dunkirk also remain blocked.

Kent police have begun Operation Stack in a bid to ease the congestion on the M20 motorway. Eurotunnel services remain unaffected.

P&O has said it will seek compensation from the French government.

Spokesman Chris Laming said: “This dispute is costing us hundreds of thousands of pounds and the bill will move very quickly past the million pound mark.

“It is hugely frustrating for all of us, especially with many passengers coming back from Easter breaks and late season skiing trips.

“We will be making financial claims from the French authorities.”

Norfolkline and Sea France services have also been affected.
