Fire boss gives girls a telling-off
Wednesday 15th April 2009, 1:03PM BST.
Three young girls received a telling-off after sparking a full-scale alert when one of them got into a crumbling old building in Telford Town Park while fooling around.
One of the girls, who are all aged 11 or 12, dialled 999 on her mobile last night after her friend squeezed through railings fencing off “the castle” in the park, but could not get back out.
A fire crew from Tweedale was sent to the scene at about 6pm, but arrived to find the girl had already been released by a park ranger.
Ed Sullivan, watch manager, said the girls were right to raise the alarm but they should not have got into the castle area in the first place.
He said: “The building is old and crumbling and so is fenced off for a reason.
“People could get hurt in there.
“I had to give the girls a stern telling off because of the trouble they had caused.
“I told them our time was valuable and we could be helping save lives and tackling serious incidents instead of turning out because they were fooling around.
“It’s a valuable lesson other youngsters need to learn, especially during the school holidays.”
None of the girls were injured in the incident.

Er is there not something wrong with the phrase ‘crumbling old building’ coupled with ‘town park’?
