Victim of gliding accident is named
Tuesday 14th April 2009, 12:04PM BST.
A man who died in a paragliding accident in which he plummeted more than 100ft and crashed into a hillside on the Shropshire-Wales border was today named by police.
Gordon Magregor, 45, from Scotland, was killed after he suffered multiple serious injuries when his paraglider crashed at White Grit, Corndon Hill, near Minsterley, on Sunday afternoon.
Police today said Mr Magregor’s family had been informed, and the coroner has also been told and an inquest is due to open in the near future.
Mr Magregor had been visiting the area with other enthusiasts and had been experienced in the sport.
A post mortem examination to establish the cause of his death will be carried out this week. The British Hand Gliding and Paragliding Association has launched an investigation and will be sending a report to the air accident branch.
Claire Thomas, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman, yesterday said the crash happened on the east side of Corndon Hill at about 3.20pm.
She said a local community first responder actually saw the paraglider fall from the sky and arrived within three minutes of the alarm being raised.
Mr Magregor was seen to plummet more than 100ft before he crashed into the hillside, she added.
Despite efforts to save him, nothing could be done and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
