Travellers face long delays to get home

Monday 13th April 2009, 11:08AM BST.

People travelling back to Shropshire and Mid Wales could face major delays today as millions head home after the Easter holiday.

An estimated 10 million people were on the move in the UK over Easter with two million travelling abroad.

Those who stayed at home enjoyed beautiful sunshine with above average temperatures and sunny spells.

Yesterday saw the mercury hit 15C (59F) as the western half of the country enjoyed fine weather, in contrast to last year’s snow.

But Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said things would take a turn from tomorrow with rain on the way for the next three days.

Mr Warner said the weather would improve at the weekend.

Those travelling by rail today had to contend with the closure of the West Coast Main Line between Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire and Rugby in the West Midlands.

Services in and out of London’s Liverpool Street and Waterloo stations were also due to be disrupted by engineering work, although 64,000 train services were running over the holiday period – about 5,000 more than last Easter.

British Airways said its top long-haul destinations for the holiday period included New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong, while short-haul favourites included Edinburgh, Paris and Geneva.

Overall, the most popular spots included the Canary Islands, Turkey and Egypt.
