Drayton home in for Alliance title
Monday 13th April 2009, 9:24AM BST.
Market Drayton Town’s stunning home record continued as they moved a step closer to clinching the Midland Alliance championship.
The Greenfields men overcame a slightly sluggish start to convincingly defeat Coleshill 4-0 on Saturday.
Drayton have now taken 52 points out of a possible 54 on home territory, conceding just six goals in their 18 home games.
And they could be crowned champions today should they win this afternoon’s derby at Shifnal and second placed Barwell fail to collect maximum points at Friar Lane & Epworth.
Tom Rogers broke the deadlock with a stunning strike in the first half, while Grant Goodhead added a second with a header before the break.
And the same two players also got on the scoresheet in the second half.
“It was all a bit nervy and scrappy to start with and we didn’t come out of the traps quickly enough,” said manager Simon Line.
“But for the last part of the first half and all of the second, we managed to control the game.”
Shifnal Town saw an impressive performance go unrewarded as they suffered a 4-2 defeat at Barwell.
Youth team goalkeeper Tom Warren, appearing in place of suspended Steve Jackson, was left with no chance as Barwell took the lead on 14 minutes.
Ben Jevons thumped home a header from a Rob Holdcroft corner to level moments later, before the hosts surged into a 3-1 lead with two goals before half-time, the latter appearing offside.
A handball from a Barwell defender allowed Ramone Stephens to reduce the deficit from the penalty spot on 49 minutes, before the home side were reduced to 10 men moments later after a striker lashed out at Richard Brown.
That didn’t prevent Barwell going 4-2 clear shortly after and Shifnal’s hopes were ended when Andy Wells was dismissed for a second bookable offence five minutes from time.
Bridgnorth Town held Tipton to a goalless draw at Crown Meadow, just three days after losing 4-0 to the same opponents.
