Road safety measures outside an Oswestry primary school will make a mountain out of a molehill, town councillors have claimed over the plans.

Shropshire Council wants to create a safer routes for school scheme outside the Our Lady and St Oswald’s Catholic School in Upper Brook Street.

It follows safety concerns for pedestrians crossing Upper Brook Street to get to the school and complaints about vehicles mounting the pavement outside the premises.

The proposed scheme will see the creation of a zebra crossing just to the east of the school and footway widening to help slow traffic down.

Priority along the narrowed road would be given to vehicles travelling out of town.

But Oswestry councillor John Evans, who said he was one of those who had raised the dangers outside the school, said: “This scheme is making a mountain out of a molehill. All that was needed was for the zebra crossing to be moved and some yellow lines painted around the corner of Oswalds Well Lane.

“There are going to be two zebra crossings within 40 yards of each other and traffic will get stuck in the middle. In fact there will be three in the space of 80 to 90 yards, it is sheer lunacy.”

He said he was also concerned that there would be some loss of parking along the road for residents.

“I feel very sorry for the people living in Upper Brook Street. I don’t know where they are going to park. There is a housing association development of 70 homes with about 20 car parking spaces there and people will not be allowed to park on the road.”

Councillors are to call for an urgent meeting with highway chiefs and also representatives of the school.
