Friends in tribute to Aiden
Saturday 11th April 2009, 2:14PM BST.
Friends and colleagues of a Bridgnorth teenager who died when a cave collapsed during a camping trip were due to hold a minute’s silence in memory of the youngster today.
The tribute will be paid to Aiden Brookes at Bridgnorth Rugby Club a few minutes before kick-off at 3pm at the club’s Edgar Davies Ground.
Aiden, of Paulbrook Road, had been camping with friends in Bridgnorth’s Hermitage Caves when a cave roof collapsed early on Monday.
The 16-year-old was a regular member of Bridgnorth Rugby Club’s under 17s academy, playing on the wing or as full back.
Yesterday his parents said Aiden had been playing in a rugby tournament for about four hours last Sunday before leaving to meet up with his friends.
It is hoped that Aiden’s parents will be at the ground this afternoon.
Aiden was also a keen cricketer and played for Bridgnorth Cricket Club for several seasons. He was a regular in Worfield’s third team last year as well as turning out occasionally for the seconds and was nominated the juniors’ bowler of the year.
As a youngster he played football for Bridgnorth Spartans. His other interests included snowboarding and he was a corporal in the 63 (Bridgnorth) Squadron Air Training Corps.
