Hero Ryan seeks more glory
Friday 10th April 2009, 12:30PM BST.
Penalty king Ryan Young has challenged AFC Telford United to use their Setanta Shield triumph as motivation to finish the season with even more success.
Hero Young saved three spot-kicks as the Bucks beat Forest Green 3-0 on penalties after a goalless draw in last night’s televised final at The New Lawn, scooping the £16,000 winners’ cheque in the process.
That has gone down as one of the highlights of the goalkeeper’s career – but he believes promotion to the Blue Square Premier would be the ultimate finale.
Telford have no time to rest on their laurels either, as they return to league action tomorrow with the visit of Redditch to the New Bucks Head.
“To win the Setanta Shield is a massive deal,” said Young.
“We’re in a good position in the league, we had good runs in the FA Cup and the FA Trophy, and this has just topped it off.
“Let’s just hope we go out tomorrow not thinking we’re big time and focus on getting the three points.
“We want to cement our place in the play-offs, because that can lead to more days like this.”
Last night’s clash was screened live by Setanta and Young was delighted to give his wife and children a rare chance to see him in action.
“My family don’t get to see me play too often,” he said. “I’ve got Rhianne who’s eight and Megan who’s six, and they get a bit bored at games.
“Michelle, my wife, doesn’t get the time to come too often so it’s good for them.
“All my extended family have been watching, lots of them have bought Setanta just for this and I feel lucky I didn’t let them down.”
Young took the plaudits from team-mates and fans for his contribution, but the keeper was quick to praise the support of former Telford custodian Dean Williams, who is now his goalkeeping coach.
“Since Deano’s been here, it’s been work, work, work to try and get better,” he said.
“Deano’s improved me, he’s taken me further and further and hopefully we can go higher.”
- The visit of Redditch tomorrow will see two familiar faces back at the New Bucks Head. The Worcestershire side are skippered by ex-Telford defender Asa Charlton and also include former Bucks striker Garry Hay in their ranks.
