Golfer Woosnam’s mother dies

Friday 10th April 2009, 10:45AM BST.

joan-woosnamThe mother of Shropshire golfer Ian Woosnam has died after a long illness.

Joan Woosnam, 74, from Oswestry, was herself a keen golfer and, despite her poor health, was still playing golf last year.

Today her family paid tribute to a “wonderful mother” who was popular and had a great sense of humour.

Mrs Woosnam died at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on April 5.

Her funeral will be held at St Oswald’s Parish Church, in Oswestry, at 10am on April 15.

Donations in her memory, to be sent to funeral directors, David Davies, will go to the Hope House Children’s Hospice.

She leaves three sons, Keith, Ian and Gareth, and daughter Julie as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her daughter Julie Janicki said Mrs Woosnam never got over the death of her husband, Harold, six years ago.

She said the family began playing golf more than 40 years ago when her father decided he was too old to play football.

“Ian was about seven when she started playing – we would all go as a family,” Mrs Janicki said.

“She carried on, first at Llanymynech were she became lady captain, and then at Oswestry Golf Club.”

Mrs Janicki added: “She was still playing last year even though she was poorly.”

Mrs Woosnam also enjoyed playing bowls, playing for a team in the Llansanttfraid area.

Ian Woosnam is currently in Augusta playing in the US Masters, a title he won in 1991.
