Darwin egg discovered

darwin-small2An egg collected by Shropshire-born naturalist Charles Darwin on his HMS Beagle voyage has been rediscovered at a museum.

The heavily-cracked shell, which had “C.Darwin” written on it, was found at Cambridge University’s Zoology Museum.

Records suggest that Darwin, who was born in Shrewsbury in 1809, broke the egg, thought to date from around the time of his 1831 to 1836 voyage, by placing it in a box which was too small.

Collections manager Mathew Lowe said to have rediscovered a Beagle specimen in the 200th year of Darwin’s birth was very special.
