An inquest on a Bridgnorth teenager who died after the roof of a cave collapsed on him during a camping trip has been opened.

South Shropshire Coroner Anthony Sibcy opened and adjourned the inquest of 16-year-old schoolboy Aiden Peter Brookes at his Ludlow office yesterday afternoon.

Aiden, of Paulbrook Road, had been camping with friends in Bridgnorth’s Hermitage Caves off Lodge Lane when a cave roof collapsed on them early on Monday.

The Oldbury Wells student was camping with about 20 friends in the cave when the tragedy happened.

Jess Wright, 18, from The Hobbins, Bridgnorth, was also camping with Aiden at the caves and was seriously injured.

Yesterday Jess, who was released from hospital on Tuesday, told of her “complete devastation” over the accident. She said she and Aiden had been friends for almost four years.

Tributes have been paid to the talented sportsman and Bridgnorth Rugby Club is due to hold a one-minute silence at its home ground on Saturday.

The inquest was adjourned until August 6.
