Family left shaken as car hits house
Thursday 9th April 2009, 11:17AM BST.
A Shropshire couple say they had a lucky escape after a car left the road and collided with their house.
The force of the impact caused a heater to fall off the living room wall and moved their sofa about a foot.
Tanya Trow and Peter Edge said the collision could have ended in tragedy because their two-year-old son Charlie often sits on the sofa and watches traffic go past their home in Salop Road, Oswestry.
Fortunately the family was upstairs when the car collided with the house yesterday, at about 11am.
Mr Edge, 29, said the family had been left shaken by the collision.
He said: “We were all upstairs when we heard a massive bang. I looked outside and saw a car further down the street.
“We came downstairs and the impact had knocked the heater off the wall and the sofa was moved about a foot.
“Charlie is crazy about cars and he often sits on the sofa watching cars go past the window.
“It is just lucky we were all upstairs at the time, but it was a bit of a shock.
“I would hate to think what could have happened if Charlie had been playing there at the time.”
Mr Edge said the wall was damaged and may need to be replaced.
“We have called our landlord and he is chasing his insurers now,” he said.
“We will have to wait for a structural engineer to tell us how bad the damage is.
“I think the car hit the house after swerving to avoid another car.
“I saw one of the drivers and he had cuts and scratches but I think he was alright.
Emergency services were called to the scene.
Claire Thomas, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman, said one person suffered minor injuries, but did not require hospital treatment.
Acting Sergeant David Dilnot, from Oswestry police station, said police had now launched an investigation into what happened.
Anyone who has information about the incident is asked to telephone Constable Roy Alderwick on 0300 333 3000.
