Scandal-hit footballer’s contract terminated

Wednesday 8th April 2009, 10:59AM BST.

Terry FearnsAFC Telford United today moved to terminate the contract of scandal-hit striker Terry Fearns following a “further breach of club discipline”.

Fearns, 31, has not played for non-League side AFC Telford since being arrested for possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply.

His arrest followed a raid at his home in the Maghull area of Liverpool in early March, though no charges have been brought.

The Bucks hit the player with a two-week suspension for failing to tell them about the incident or to turn up for the following first team match. That suspension ended on Monday last week, and the club has now moved to part company with the experienced forward. He has until Monday to appeal.

In a statement issued today, chairman Lee Carter said: “The club will not be making any further comment on the matter and ask that the whole club now focus on the football challenges that lie ahead in the coming weeks.”

It is understood that the further breach of discipline relates to Fearns’ failure to have any communication with the club since his suspension ended or to attend any of the three first-team matches that have taken place since then.

The prolific forward arrived at the New Bucks Head in the summer, having previously been a top goalscorer for several non-League clubs, including Vauxhall Motors, Southport and Droylsden.

He quickly settled at Telford, with two early hat-tricks helping him to a tally of 17 goals. He is still the Bucks’ joint second top scorer this season. Those goals have helped lift the club to the play-off positions in the Blue Square North.
