Play-offs looming for Bucks

Wednesday 8th April 2009, 12:00PM BST.

AFC Telford United striker Andy Brown acrobatically bicycle kicks the second goal of the night against HarrogateBoss Rob Smith hailed the return of the “old” AFC Telford United – after seeing his side strengthen their Blue Square North play-off credentials.

Telford were 3-1 winners over Harrogate Town at the New Bucks Head last night, a result that has seen them take a significant step towards confirming their place in the all-important top five.

But it was the manner of their play, especially in the latter stages, that was of most encouragement to their manager.

“The one thing that was nice to see was that in the last 15 or 20 minutes we actually got it down and played some nice football,” said Smith.

“The confidence came back into us and you could see that, as soon as we got the third goal, it all came oozing back from the way we were playing in November and that was nice to see. Hopefully we can play the rest of the season with smiles on our faces now.

“It’s so mentally tiring trying to get into these play-offs but, hopefully, we’re nearly there.

“That’s six points from the last two games, which has made me a lot happier than I was last Tuesday (after the defeat at Farsley).”

Striker Ricky Sappleton, on-loan from Leicester, got the opener last night, but it was Andy Brown who stole the show with two in the second half to take his tally for the season to 20.

The second came from the penalty spot after Harrogate keeper Jonathan Hedges was red-carded for a foul on substitute Steve Jagielka.

“He’s got those goals, as he keeps reminding me, despite being out injured for two months,” added Smith.

“We’ve always told him that if he keeps working hard he’ll get his rewards, and he’s getting them in abundance now.

“He should have had a hat-trick last night, but that lad’s a diamond as far as I’m concerned.”

* Supporters can still book seats on the coaches to Forest Green for tomorrow night’s Setanta Shield final. The club have already got five coaches lined up and are considering running a sixth as interest continues to grow.
