Crew fights boiler fire

Wednesday 8th April 2009, 10:55AM BST.

A Shropshire leisure centre was evacuated when a fire broke out in the boiler room.

More than 40 people were at Oakengates Leisure Centre in Telford yesterday when the fire broke out.

Firefighters from Telford, Wellington and Tweedale were called to the scene to tackle the fire, which involved a boiler, at 9pm.

Tony Druce, Telford Central watch manger, said: “We were there just over an hour.

“There were about 40 people evacuated and everybody was back inside the building after about half an hour.”

Mr Druce said the boiler fire had started accidently.
