Village pub on market

Tuesday 7th April 2009, 1:32PM BST.

A pub in the heart of a Shropshire village has been put up for sale, sparking fears that the new owner may not keep it as an inn.

Pontesbury has four pubs but if the Red Lion is sold, councillors are worried it could be turned into something else.

Councillor Nick Hignett said: “There are still three village pubs. But this is right in the centre of the village and the heart of the community.”

Jo Sandall, a spokeswoman for Punch Taverns, which owns the pub, said: “The Red Lion is for sale and we are in discussions with potential buyers.”

I have always wanted CAMRA, Campaign for Real Ale, or if you like my version, Campaign again Malt Reduction in Ale, to take on a role like the National Trust, where they create a paying membership. The Funds and donations from this could then be used to PURCHASE such PUBS as the Red Lion in Pontesbury.
Even tho’ I live in Australia now, I would donate to such a cause and there are many others around the world who would also.

CAMRA has a paying membership (£22 a year, or £20 if paid by direct debit) of quite a few thousand, with dozens of local branches.
