Shake-up over Senior Cup backlog
Tuesday 7th April 2009, 12:37PM BST.
The Shropshire Senior Cup will be a direct shoot-out between Shrewsbury Town and AFC Telford United until 2011 as the famous competition undergoes a revamp.
The decision has been taken by Shropshire Football Association officials to help ease the burden of growing fixture congestion over the next two years.
It means Midland Alliance teams Market Drayton, Bridgnorth and Shifnal – who have been involved in the competition in recent seasons – will all miss out on their chance to pit themselves against the county’s ‘big two’ in competitive matches.
Chiefs have been forced to play catch-up in the competition after last season’s final between Shrewsbury and Telford was postponed because of poor weather.
Hopes of fitting the game in during the season have been dashed by packed fixture lists for both clubs, meaning the 2008-9 showpiece will now be staged on Tuesday, July 21 at the Prostar Stadium.
The 2009-10 final will be played between the same two teams at the New Bucks Head on a date to be confirmed this October or November, while the 2010-11 final has already been pencilled in for July 20 next year, at the Prostar Stadium.
“The pressure on the fixture list of all clubs is growing all the time so this is in place until 2010-11 and it will be assessed again then,” said Shropshire FA chief executive David Rowe.
Midland Alliance trio Drayton, Bridgnorth and Shifnal will be transferred back to compete in the Shropshire Challenge Cup.
That has caused some disappointment at Drayton, who are on the brink of winning the Alliance title and earning promotion to the UniBond League – step four on the football pyramid and just two levels below Telford.
“If that was to be the case I would find it very disappointing if we were playing in the UniBond League yet not accepted into the senior competition in the county,” said Drayton boss Simon Line.
Bridgnorth chairman Eric Eagles, however, insists he can understand the Shropshire FA’s quandary.
“My sympathy is with them,” he said. “It would be nice to be in the competition with Shrewsbury and Telford but it’s a real issue trying to juggle the dates to get the game in.”

Absolute Disgrace.
MDTFC have scared Telford & Shrewsbury Town to death over the last 2 seasons.
What kind of message are the Shropshire FA giving to clubs such as MDTFC,Shifnal & Bridgnoth.

shropshire senior cup is a disgrace, its a bit like the national F A saying, everyones a bit busy this year so lets to straight to a manchester united v chelsea final,
how can it be called a competition when there are only two teams taking part surely thats just a match.

This is a farce, there are more than 2 teams in Shropshire. With Market Drayton on the verge of being promoted to the Unibond 1st division, where AFC Telford UTD started, makes it more of a farce.

Finally a decent result, Market Drayton, B’north, Shifnal etc are merely there to make up the numbers, with their pathetic crowds. If they want to be considered serious, get into a higher league

what a complete farce this is, the shropshire FA need to look at this again how can you have a knockout competition with only 2 teams in it they might aswell forget the competition all together it only brings suspensions and injuries anyway its not fair on the likes of Bridgnorth,Market Drayton and Shifnal who have all played well over the previous few seasons to say they cannot enter.

I’m a Telford supporter and I think this is disgraceful – oldest cup competition in the WORLD. It should be open to all county teams of a reasonable standing – a chance for the smaller teams to cause an upset and get a pay day. At least this year it’s going to be at the end of the season rather than treated as a joke pre-sesaon friendly – totally, totally wrong Shropshire F.A. – shame on you!

I think it’s a great idea that it’s just gonna be Telford & shrewsbury, I’ve played for Market Drayton (little Drayton) and Bridgenorth and the standard is well below that of Shrewsbury’s and Telford’s…

Speaking as a Shrewbury fan I think this is a very poor decision. Ok – there is a (big) gap between the top 2 teams and the others, but it’s a chance for the smaller teams to test themselves – and it doesn’t do STFC or KFC Telford any harm in terms of a PR exercise with grass roots supporters around their catchment area….

Poor decision. Would these clubs be barred from playing in the FA Cup. I think not. Would this decision have been made if it was not for the heavy rain which caused a match to be called off. They should have agreed a Plan B for matches called off even if this was a penalty shoot out. At least planned matches could get a result and would not need to be rescheduled.
