Wrekin paraglider in hospital
Monday 6th April 2009, 1:08PM BST.
A paraglider was seriously injured after plunging up to 40ft on to The Wrekin.
The 44-year-old man was flying his paraglider when he got into difficulty yesterday before crash landing.
Walkers on the hillside helped the man, from Walsall, until medical help arrived.
The Midlands Air Ambulance was sent to the scene and landed near to where the man had fallen at 10.40am.
An ambulance crew and a staff member from a rapid response vehicle also hiked to the injured man, who was close to the summit and had suffered a suspected broken right leg.
Murray MacGregor, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: “Due to the location, the air ambulance was first on scene.
“There were quite a number of walkers at the location who were able to provide information about what had happened.
“Those there said that the man had been about 40ft up when he seemed to get into trouble and descended very quickly landing heavily.
“The man was in a lot of pain. He was complaining of back and right leg injuries.
“The 44-year-old Walsall man was immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board before being airlifted to the trauma centre at Selly Oak Hospital.
“The crew did want to pay tribute to those at the scene who were extremely helpful.”
