Funding of £34,500 has been injected into Powys Citizens Advice Bureau, but more money is needed amid fears it could fold.

The money will prevent staffing cuts but the bureau claims more money will need to be found next year to help them stay afloat.

A spokeswoman for Powys CAB said the funding has been awarded from the National Citizens Advice Service, but the money could have gone towards improving the service if Powys County Council had not cut its funding by 15 per cent.

A spokeswoman for Powys CAB said the funding has been awarded from the National Citizens Advice Service, but the money could have gone towards improving the service if Powys County Council had not cut its funding by 15 per cent.

She said: “This extra funding will enable us to provide more face-to-face advice up until March 2010.

“But had the core funds remained at its previous levels, this . . . money would have been able to secure even more support for hard pressed Powys residents in the coming year.”

John Evans, communications manager for the council, said: “Last summer Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations facilitated a workshop of voluntary organisations for the council to consider how efficiencies could be implemented this financial year.

“The clear message was that any reduction should be equitable with all organisations receiving the same reduction. The Powys CAB has enjoyed considerable support from Powys in the past and despite this year’s necessary reduction will receive more than £93,000.”
