Small car sales up by 84 per cent

Sales of fuel-efficient cars in Britain are up by 84 per cent since March 2008, amid news today that overall car figures have plummeted by 30 per cent.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced today that new car registrations in the UK fell by 30.5 per cent in March to 313,912 from a year ago. But small car sales increased to 7,259 new registrations, the only car sector that showed growth.
The Hyundai i10 was the biggest-selling small car, with the Vauxhall Agila in second place.
An SMMT spokesperson said: “Even though the amount of small cars sold is low compared with the total number of new cars bought in the same period, it still shows that fuel-efficient cars are going up.”
Small cars are defined as two-door vehicles with more fuel-efficient engines, and are seen as more environmentally-friendly.
