Larry aims for play-offs

lee-smith-larry-chambers-1We’re bang on target – that was the message from AFC Telford United’s No 2 Larry Chambers as he sets his sights firmly on the promotion play-offs.

The Bucks won 2-1 at Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday to keep a firm grip on fourth place in Blue Square North.

It was a key victory for the Shropshire side, especially with the likes of Alfreton and Stalybridge also winning to keep the pressure on.

“Alfreton could have gone above us, so it was important that we matched what they did,” said Chambers.

“It’s a great three points on our travels, and that’s something we’ve not managed to do too often over the last two or three months.

“We’ve set a target within the camp of what we need (to make the play-offs) and we’ll keep that to ourselves, but we feel it is attainable.

“The disappointing thing for me is that we’re having to worry about the teams behind us, whereas a month ago we were looking at trying to win it.

“We’ve failed to stay in touch with the leaders, but now we’re looking at making sure of that play-off place.”

The Bucks went ahead on Saturday with a super strike from Carl Rodgers, but were pegged back in the second half when Simon Bird fired in after keeper Ryan Young had saved Lewis McMahon’s penalty.

Midfielder Liam Blakeman popped up to score the winner 11 minutes from time as the Bucks recorded their ninth away victory of the campaign.

“For them to score when we hadn’t looked like conceding was disappointing but to come back and get the winner was pleasing, and they showed good character,” added Chambers.

“It was important we started well. It was a great goal from Carl Rodgers, who I thought was immense.”

Telford are now set for a gruelling five games in nine days, starting with the visit of Harrogate tomorrow before travelling to Forest Green for the televised Setanta Shield final on Thursday.
