Motorist killed in accident with lorry

County air ambulanceA motorist was killed and her passenger airlifted to hospital with serious injuries when their car was in a smash with a lorry near Whitchurch.

The female driver of a Renault Scenic was pronounced dead at the scene but has not yet been named.

The driver of the heavy goods vehicle escaped injury.

The accident happened on the A530 road between Whitchurch and Nantwich, with its junction with the A525 Audlem road near the north Shropshire border at Combermere at about 2.15pm yesterday.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: “Crews arrived to the scene of a collision involving a lorry and a people carrier.

There was significant damage to the car, in which had been a woman driver and a male passenger.

“The woman was confirmed dead at the scene. Her passenger, a 21-year-old man, had abdominal pain and a suspected fractured pelvis. He was airlifted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.”

Four people were also taken to hospital following two accidents in Telford.

One woman was trapped when three cars collided at Trench Lock Interchange just after 10pm yesterday. She was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford. Two other people were also taken to hospital.

In a separate crash a woman was taken to hospital after two cars collided in Old Park Way, Telford, at 8.45pm yesterday.
