Kirstie’s name will live on

Kirstie Foster (Picture: Newsteam)The family of Kirstie Foster, killed by her businessman father before he destroyed their £1.15 million home in a massive blaze, has vowed her memory will live on.

Coroner John Ellery yesterday ruled failed businessman Christopher Foster killed his wife Jill and 15-year-old Kirstie by shooting them in the head before setting fire to their luxury home and killing himself.

Speaking after the ruling, Mr Foster’s brother Andrew announced that Kirstie would be remembered through a special trophy which will be presented at the annual Riding for the Disabled championships in July.

Mr Foster said a fundraising page in memory of horse-mad Kirstie, which will see cash raised go to the association, had also been set up.

Inferno

Yesterday Mr Ellery recorded a verdict of unlawful killing in the cases of Jill and Kirstie Foster, and ruled Foster killed himself after turning Osbaston House in Maesbrook into an inferno.

The two-day inquest at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court revealed the extent of Foster’s huge financial troubles and how he had spoken of suicidal thoughts.

Mr Ellery said there were lessons to be learned about the sharing of information between licensing authorities and GPs, as Foster’s own doctor had no idea he owned a gun after confiding about feeling suicidal.

He said he will be making a recommendation to the police and British Medical Association.

Andrew Foster said: “It has become apparent that Christopher had been mentally ill for some time and had discussed with his GP and other people that he intended to take his own life.

“We are not apportioning blame or condoning Christopher’s actions during the morning of August 26 last year, but we wish to highlight that preventative measures such as improved communication between GPs and police force firearms officers in the future could help stop a similar tragedy happening.”

Detective Superintendent Jon Groves, who led the investigation, said: “Now the inquest has concluded and we have the verdict I hope it offers some sort of closure to the Fosters’ loved ones and they can begin to move forward and to rebuild their lives.”
