Chambers calls for more steel

Friday 3rd April 2009, 1:14PM BST.

larry-chambersLarry Chambers has called on AFC Telford United to show a “steely determination” to get their Blue Square North play-off charge back on track.

The Bucks make the trip east tomorrow to take on Gainsborough Trinity, with the criticism still ringing in their ears from Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat at Farsley.

That result has left them anxiously looking over their shoulders with the likes of Alfreton and Harrogate closing in behind them.

But assistant manager Chambers insists they must now show why they have been one of the front-runners all season.

“I’m not nervous about the situation and I think we’ve got enough quality in the squad to reach the play-offs,” he said. “We’ve got to show a more steely determination on our travels though, and it must start tomorrow.

“We’ve been shooting ourselves in the foot by conceding the first goal too often, and we don’t want to be playing that sort of football.”

Gainsborough have gone seven games without a win, drawing all of their last four.

It is a run that has ruined their hopes of a play-off charge and left them languishing in 12th position.

But Chambers added: “On paper they’ve got a reasonable side and their manager (Steve Charles) feels his side have under-achieved.

“They’ve got Luke Beckett straight out of the Football League and he’s been banging the goals in, and Lewis McMahon has played for the England non-League side so they’re capable.”

The Bucks have a large squad available for the trip to Lincolnshire, with midfielder Phil Trainer the only fresh absentee with a knee injury.

Right-back Lee Vaughan will rack up a club record 134th appearance if selected.

  • Left-back James Meredith has been suspended for two games after being sent-off in the Setanta Shield northern area final at Barrow last week. He will now miss the final at Forest Green and the Blue Square North game at home to Redditch two days later.
