Vaughan’s new Telford leader

Thursday 2nd April 2009, 11:41AM BST.

lee-vaughanRight-back Lee Vaughan will set a new AFC Telford United record on Saturday – overhauling former goalkeeper Stuart Brock as the club’s top appearance maker.

Vaughan matched Brock’s tally of 133 appearances in Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat at Farsley Celtic and will move out in front if selected on Saturday at Gainsborough.

Club record signing Lee Moore had been leading the chase, but has been marooned on 132 appearances, having been left out for the last four games.

That has given former Walsall youngster Vaughan the chance to move in – and he insists he wants to go on for years to come.

“It’s an absolute honour to play for this club and to play the most games is excellent,” said Vaughan today.

“Let’s hope I can go on and play a few more – and I want to do it in higher leagues, and there’s no reason why we can’t do that.

“It would be nice to get another 100 appearances in the league above.”

Assistant manager Larry Chambers was quick to pay tribute to Vaughan for his achievement, hailing him as one of the most important signings of his career.

“I think he came to Telford within a week of myself and Rob (Smith) taking over,” he said.

“For all his bookings and suspensions, I’d say that pound-for-pound he’s close to being our best ever signing.

“All he wants to do is win football matches and he’s been good for us – there have been times when you wish you had more Lee Vaughans around you.”

Vaughan, meanwhile, is hoping his big day on Saturday also marks a return to winning ways after the setback at Farsley.

That result has left the side with work to do to cement their play-off place – but the 22-year-old remains confident.

“It’s hard to think about it after a performance like Tuesday – it’s hard to pick yourself up but we have to do it,” he added. “We’re still in with a chance, we don’t become a bad side overnight.”
