No laughs from smiley faces

Mysterious smiling blue faces have begun to spring up tied to bridges over roads in Shrewsbury.

One face is attracting attention after appearing on the bridge leading from the town Riverside shopping centre to Frankwell car park.

Another was spotted tied to a bridge over Bage Way in the town.

The blue face attached to the side of the bridge over Smithfield Road and the River Severn looks down on motorists travelling into the town from Frankwell.

But it is not known why the faces have appeared on the structures and who has actually put them there – or when.

The smiley faces may well have been put up yesterday – April Fools Day – and it is believed it could be part of a prank.

It was also the final day the Guildhall, which lies at the end of the Frankwell footbridge, was home to Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council before the authority ceased to exist and the building became the property of the new Shropshire Council.

But the smiley face appears not to have been a farewell gesture from the authorities as they today said the actions were considered as fly-posting and that the face would be taken down.

The face over Bage Way has already been removed.

Mark Howarth, Shropshire Council’s street scene manager, said: “We have investigated the flyposting on the Frankwell footbridge and will be removing the sign later today.

“We encourage people to contact us if they see any flyposting around the town.”

Oh no how awful, someone did something slightly happy. What a miserable, moan-ridden, po-faced town this can be.
