Inquiry over poisoned cats
Thursday 2nd April 2009, 11:15AM BST.
A spate of deaths of cats, poisoned by anti-freeze in Shropshire and north Wales, is being investigated by the RSPCA.
At least 15 cats have died and, although inspectors are keeping an open mind, they say their deaths could be malicious.
The RSPCA is urging people to dispose of anti-freeze responsibly after three cats were poisoned just over the Shropshire border.
Some weeks ago a cat died in Oswestry and as many as 15 cats have died in incidents in Chirk and the Deeside area.
RSPCA inspector Chris Dunbar said: “I can’t remember so many incidents of cat poisonings in such a short period of time. We are however keeping an open mind at the moment.
“It could be that the cats have been targeted maliciously or it could be that someone is simply unaware of the potential hazard to cats when they are pouring the liquid away.
Whatever the circumstances we want to warn all cat owners of the dangers of anti-freeze poisoning.”
