Thursday 2nd April 2009, 8:44AM BST.
The FTSE 100 finally broke the 4,000 barrier this morning, rising 2.85 per cent in early trading.
Opening at 3,990.01, the index quickly rose to 4,067.38 by 08:26 BST carried by a surge in investor optimism.
An unexpected rise in house prices, combined with hopes for the G20 meeting held today, helped boost the FTSE 100 beyond the psychological 4,000 mark.
Barclays led the rally, rising 7.26 per cent in early trading, followed by mining group Kazakhmys, up by 6.39 per cent.
Only a handful of stocks were in the red, with silver miner Fresnillo topping the list, as it fell by 1.61 per cent.
US markets were also lifted by positive economic news yesterday.
The Dow Jones closed two per cent higher, while the S&P 500 rose 1.7 per cent over the day.
