Schools celebrate test results
Wednesday 1st April 2009, 11:55AM BST.
Shropshire schools were today celebrating more exceptional results in the latest league tables showing how well schoolchildren have performed in tests for 11-year-olds.
Within the Shropshire Council education area overall scores again rose in all three core subjects.
And improvements have continued to be made in Telford & Wrekin.
The annual Key Stage 2 achievement and attainment tables published by the Department for Children, Schools and Families today, show that nationally record numbers of primary schools are scoring full marks in the tests.
But the tables also reveal that the majority of pupils at almost 800 primaries in England are leaving their schools without a good grounding in English and maths.
At about one in 20 primaries – 798 in total – fewer than half of 11-year-olds achieved a level 4, the standard expected of the age group, in both subjects in their Sats tests last year.
Across Shropshire schools 84 per cent of pupils gained the benchmark in English, 80 per cent in maths and 90 per cent in science.
Ann Hartley, Shirehall cabinet member for children’s services, described the results as “fantastic”.
Hodnet School, from near Market Drayton, is listed in the top 200 best nationally along with Telford’s Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge CE School.
County schools have also scored well in another important indicator known as contextual value added, which shows the progress children make from the age of seven.
