Murray: Town peaking at right time

Wednesday 1st April 2009, 10:54AM BST.

paul-murrayExperienced midfielder Paul Murray believes Shrewsbury Town could be peaking at the perfect time in the thrilling League Two promotion run-in.

Town are currently six games unbeaten, their longest stretch of the season without tasting defeat.

And, while five of those have been draws, Murray is confident the team could be coming to the boil at the right time.

“We are probably on the most consistent run we have had this season,” said the 32-year-old.

“We have had a few draws but consistently we have kept clean sheets and we have done well.

“We have taken steps in the right direction recently and we have to continue that.

“The good thing is that confidence is high and I think that showed at Wycombe on Saturday because we battered a team that was, at one stage, 12 points clear in this League.”

Town remain in the play-off positions after last night’s games with Chesterfield missing the chance to dislodge them from the top seven after being held 1-1 at Aldershot.

A victory for Exeter and draw for Wycombe – against Port Vale and Barnet respectively – means they are both now five points ahead of Shrewsbury.

Meanwhile, trialist striker Omer Riza scored his first goal in Town colours yesterday when he found the net in a 4-1 behind-closed-doors friendly defeat at the hands of a strong Wolves team.

A four month ban imposed by the Turkish FA over a contract dispute means the former Arsenal youngster – who has been training daily with Town since the turn of the year – is currently restricted to playing in behind-closed-doors games.

But manager Paul Simpson has hinted that the FIFA may yet rule that the 29-year-old could play for Town before the end of the season.

Simpson said: “There is a possibility we could get something over the next few weeks.”

So a run of draws is “peaking” – what a joke! Why don’t town players stop talking about it and actually deliver. No away win since October 2008!

Thanks for that Monkey…I’m sure the players and staff are all inspired now!!!. There used to be a saying that win your home games and take a point away is a good basis for promotion. 6 games unbeaten in this league is a credit…supporters and teams have to remember that no team is going to lie down and die just because their playing Shrewsbury. Its a hard league to get out of. Now lets stop moaning and get behind the team. I for one will be pleased with a play off finish. Good luck lads.
