Have you noticed the difference yet?

shirehall21The Shropshire Star says: Today the landscape of Shropshire has undergone a far reaching change which will affect the lives of all Salopians.

The new Shropshire Council has been born.

This is not just any council, but a super council. It combines the roles and functions of the old (as we must now call it) Shropshire County Council with those of the various district and borough councils, which have all been knocked on the head.

It is a new kid on the block. And it formalises the division of the geographical county of Shropshire into two administrative units – this new Shropshire Council, and Telford & Wrekin Council, which itself “broke away” to become a unitary authority in 1998.

On the evidence of polls, not many Salopians wanted to see this new council born. Big claims have already been made about its benefits.

It is said there have been savings of £14 million. Salopians will also benefit through a zero council tax increase. There will be greater efficiency and less confusion about service delivery, it is said.

It is easy to make such promises in advance. Today the hard work begins on delivering on them.

In my house, we have already been told of a negative change to the purchse of rail and bus passes which up till now have been done in the local library. The new system would have meant travelling to Bridgnorth or Shrewsbury in future. This has now been rectified after dozens of complaints and the intervention of our Parish councillor. Roll on further changes, I won’t hold my breath for any improvements
