Good luck to the new authority.
It’s probably true that these changes to local government were railroaded through without any true concerns as to public opinion, but the best of luck to them and the council’s employees all the same.
At the moment, the council PR machine is in overdrive as to how good this will be for the people of Shropshire and how much money will be saved through the setting up of a unitary authority and so on.
This was pretty much what was claimed when Powys County Council and Telford and Wrekin were set up – and look how much trouble these two athorities are in now.
We are in for hard times – Government will try and claw back as much off councils as they can, and Shropshire Council will be – in not for now, for the future – a tempting target.
Shropshire Council will need all the luck in the world because I suspect the honeymoon period will be relatively short.
