Brave new dawn for county council
Wednesday 1st April 2009, 2:35PM BST.

Shropshire today made its historic switch to unitary status with a single powerful council running public services across the county.
Staff and councillors from the county council and five borough and district authorities – excluding Telford & Wrekin – have been working for months to ensure the transition goes as smoothly as possible.
Malcolm Pate, chairman of the executive committee, which has overseen the change, said: “I am delighted we are finally here.
“I would like to thank all the leaders of the political groups at Shropshire County Council, the leaders of the district and borough councils and all of the staff, for their support and co-operation in delivering the new unitary council.
“We are committed to providing services locally, and people will have greater access to their council than ever before.”
Sheila Healy, the council’s interim chief executive, said: “The move to a single unitary council has always been based on increased efficiency, better services and greater influence for people at a local level.
“It is important that we embrace those ideas from day one.”
The headquarter offices of the former councils are all being used by the new council, and receptions will be open to the public as normal.

Oh Joy, I now live in the undemocratic ward of Bayston Hill, Column and Sutton.

Good luck to the new authority.
It’s probably true that these changes to local government were railroaded through without any true concerns as to public opinion, but the best of luck to them and the council’s employees all the same.
At the moment, the council PR machine is in overdrive as to how good this will be for the people of Shropshire and how much money will be saved through the setting up of a unitary authority and so on.
This was pretty much what was claimed when Powys County Council and Telford and Wrekin were set up – and look how much trouble these two athorities are in now.
We are in for hard times – Government will try and claw back as much off councils as they can, and Shropshire Council will be – in not for now, for the future – a tempting target.
Shropshire Council will need all the luck in the world because I suspect the honeymoon period will be relatively short.
